Legend, Myths and Origins

Guman Thong are the spirits of toddlers, that have been trapped, and pushed into the service of people, for specific purposes. They originated from the practice of sorcerers enlisting the aid of ghosts to do their bidding. Some Thais believe that the most powerful Guman Thong are created from the spirit of a child who died while inside the mother’s body, also known as “Dtai Tang Klom”.

“Khun Chang Khun Paen” is a famous folk tale from Thailand, but debate rages on about whether these were factual accounts, or simply legend, as it contains accounts of people flying through the air astride spirits, and summoning lightning and thunder from thin air. Certain elements of the story, however, are rooted in truth, involving real historical figures.
